Question: Hi, I am having sore throat and cold. I am not sure which medicines are safe during pregnancy(4months). Kindly advice the medicines. Thanks & regards, XXXX

Brief Answer: Antibiotics and antihistamines Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX Thanks for the query. Though cold is a common complaint, any type of possible infection to be treated carefully in pregnancy. As you are having sore throat and cold, better to consult gynecologist and get examined to rule out infection. After that with her advice you can go for treatment involving drugs: -Antibiotics to treat infection. In pregnancy penicillin group of drugs like ampicillin and amoxycillin etc are safe. -To treat cold you can take antihistamines like cetrizine. It belongs to category B drugs in pregnancy. So it is considered comparatively safer drug. Apart from these you can try household remedies like: -Increasing water intake -Taking warm tea, soups, tea with honey -Stream inhalation etc. Hope I have answered your query. Usually in our hospital we prescribe antibiotics like Amoxil, Alphamox, trimox, policylin etc for minor infections in pregnancy. These can be taken twice a day or thrice a day depending on the dosage of the drug and severity of the problem. So consult gynecologist once, get examined and take tablets according to her advice.
