Suggest Treatment For Sore And Pain At Back Of Tongue
Question: I am getting over a recent viral infection that involved sore throat, ear aches/fluid, sinus issues. I feel well overall except for soreness at the very back sides of my tongue. Right where the side of the tongue meets the back of the mouth. I have pain in these 2 spots with swallowing/moving tongue. I might have some bumps back there but hard to see. No obvious redness etc. It's really irritating.

1. The soreness at the very back of the tongue, right where the side of the tongue meets the back of the mouth is where the muscles that make up the pillars of the tonsils (palatopharyngeus and palatoglossus; part of the tonsil bed) are inserted.
2. This means that you had an acute tonsillitis that is now resolving.
3. These structures move when swallowing/ moving the tongue, hence the pain and discomfort.
4. Some of the bumps you see are normal (circumvallate papillae) and some are bumps of the lingual tonsil and the lymphoid tissue of the throat.
5. Continue your treatment and this should subside in a couple of days. If it persists, get re-examined for a change on medication (after a throat swab and a routine blood test).
