Suggest Treatment For Sinus Infection

Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: My 7 year old has been running. 101-102 fever off and on (without medicine) for 4 days. Prior to this he was exhibiting what we considered normal seasonal allergy symptoms. He is stuffy, bad breath and has a headache. He is eating normally and in good spirits.

I'm thinking sinus infection which he has had before. Should I take him in or wait a few more days?

Brief Answer:
I would like to closely observe the child for next 2-3 days

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The most common cause of fever with cough and cold in this age is viral infection.
Most of the time the infection is limited to upper airway and gets subsided by 5-8 days.
The management is symptomatic like paracetamol for fever and headache, antiallergic with decongestant for cold and nasal blockade.Steam inhalation and warm saline gargle are home remedies which also provide relief.
Although there is slightly increased propensity to develop sinus infection in the presence of positive past history, but sinus infection should be suspected once the symptoms persist for a longer duration(more than 10-14 days)
Headache and stuffiness is common in sinus infection but can occur in viral URI also.
Make a temperature chart to monitor the fever,as it should start declining in frequency or severity after 4-5 days.
So in the present situation I would like to observe for the improvement of symptoms for next 2-3 days along with providing symptomatic management and will get him evaluated by a pediatrician once the symptoms worsen or persist for longer duration.
I hope this answers your query.
I shall be happy to answer if you have any further query.
Wish you son speedy recovery.
Regards
