Posted on Sat, 4 Feb 2017
Question: I have been on Xaralto for over a year now and have developed a rash or hives on the back of my legs which is becoming painful. Topical treatments do not seem to help. Will I need to stop Xaralto? What can I treat this rash with?

Brief Answer:
Possible side effect .

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thank you for posting your question here .

You mean Xarelto(Rivaroxaban ) .?..
This could be a side effect of this drug .You should go to emergency to prevent any further side effect of this drug such as internal bleeding .

.The local doctor will do some blood test ( INR - that shows the coagulation function of your blood cells) .This drug is a blood thinner that prevents the formation of blood clots but sometimes can cause bleeding as a side effect.
When you stop the medication the rash will go away.
Don't use any Aspirin, Ibuprofen or other antimmflamator drug.

Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further clarifications I will be happy to help.
Take Care !

Thank you for your most helpful answer. I will make an appointment with my Dr. In the meantime, do you believe this rash is a sign of internal bleeding or merely an intolerance for the drug?

Detailed Answer:
Hi again !
We refere to internal bleeding , when you bleed inside your body ( from the internal organs, brain, stomach ... ),it's a dangerous side effect .

The drug intolerance is when you react to the drug with the overdose symptoms and the main symptom in this this case will be internal bleeding( bloody or black stools, coughing up blood or vomiting blood ). So intolerance and internal bleeding go together .

Sometimes the dosage that you have been taking for a year could turn to be a high dosage for you because your body does not eliminate like used to do .If you body does not eliminate in a proper way , the drug accumulate and may be toxic(intolerance ).

The rash you have may be a allergic reaction or bleeding under the skin (both are side effect).

You can check by yourself : If you press the skin whith your fingers what happens after ? If the skin change , turn to white colour (in this case it's probably an allergic reaction).

If the skin colour does not change (is still red after pressure ) shows more for bleeding under the skin that carry the danger of developing an internal bleeding.

In both situation you need to stop the drug.
You need a full examination by your local doctor to confirm the diagnosis .

Take Care !
