default
Posted on Fri, 25 Nov 2016
Question: In February of this year I had a severe allergic reaction to Cipro. After that I started to develop symptoms as follows: I am lethargic after being up for 4 hours, my muscles , veins or nerves are aching, I have trouble moving. The only thing that helps is motrin. When this all started my blood pressure went up to 150/ 96. I have recently had a physical and all the bloodwork came back normal except my cholesterol was 230. So now my doctor has me on medication for both, but my problem is still there. I have seen so many different doctor to find out what's wrong with me. I have been a smoker for years. Trying to quit is hard. OK. I am going to try and explain this the best I can. I have pain in my neck where my carotid artery is and I have had it for a while, pains in my legs that stop me from functioning. Sleeping lately is terrible because I can't find a position in bed that doesn't hurt. Please help if you can.

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

I carefully passed through your medical history and would explain that it is necessary to consider one of the three following alternatives:

1- It is known that Ciprofloxacine can trigger myalgia, myastenia, irreversible polyneuropathy and even vasculitis. To investigate the possibility of these adverse effects, it is necessary performing
- a complete blood count
- muscular enzymes and liver enzymes
- a nerve conduction study coupled with an electromyography.

2- DRESS syndrome. It is a systemic reaction as an adverse effect of some antibiotics. It is associated to increased circulating eosinophiles, low platelet count and increased lymphocytes. A complete blood count coupled with liver and kidney function tests would help exclude this possibility.

3- Your symptoms could be related to simvastatin, that you are actually taking. I would recommend checking your muscle enzymes, liver function tests and in case they result elevated, you should consider stopping simvastatin, because it may cause or aggravate your symptoms.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
