Suggest Treatment For Shooting Pain In The Back Of The Knee

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: I have random shooting pains in the back of my left knee, I would liken it to an electric shock, normally for a second or two however they have been increasing in time and frequency especially when I am in bed.

I had them about 8 months ago and never before this and they went however have now returned and have been having them on a daily basis for the last 2 weeks.

A couple of points, I started weight training and running again about 5 week ago [5/6 times per week after a 4 week break]

I'm not sure if I have a trapped nerve and doubt it's a bakers cyst

I've heard it could be piriformis syndrome, given me doin a lot of sprinnting, glute work such as heavy squats and leg presses?

Brief Answer:
Can be a nerve compression.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The sudden electric shock like feeling at the back of the knee is likely to be due to a nerve compression in the popliteal fossa. This can be related to a Baker's cyst or a local soft tissue swelling in the area. It is less likely to be due to piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome usually starts with pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks. Pain can be severe and extend down the length of the sciatic nerve (called sciatica).
The best way to diagnose the problem is to consult a neurologist and get an MRI scan of the knee done. You can start taking methylcobalamin supplements till then and see if it helps.
I hope this answers your query.
