Question: I am having very sharp pain on upper back on left side. Took 2 Aleve and they are not stopping. It happened to me last night and by morning they were gone. Back with a vengeance. Could this be a heart attack?

Brief Answer:
Does not seem to be heart attack.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to health care magic,

This symptom of left upper back pain does NOT seem to be due to heart attack here.

Usually, pain from the heart has a classical description like severe left sided chest pain radiating to left arm and left shoulder joint with restlessness, uneasiness and some times breathing difficulty.

However, on a very few occasions we also have atypical presentations where the heart pain is referred to left side neck, jaw, left arm, left shoulder or over left upper back.

Therefore though it is unlikely that this pain could be from the heart, it is always advisable to rule out heart ischemic pain from tests.

Hence I will advise you to see a doctor who after physical check up can order for EKG to rule out heart ischemia.

Hope you will understand now and do not bother much about heart attack.

Take care and let me know if you have more doubts.

Thanks and Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
