Suggest Treatment For Severe Stomach Cramps And Diarrhea

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Apr 2017
Question: Hi. I had bad stomach cramps on Tuesday night. It lasted from 11pm to 4am. I went to my GP who took blood. My blood count was normal, so he suspected food poisoning, as opposed to a virus, even though I did not vomit or have diarrhea. I was ok on Wednesday, but for the last day or so I have been experiencing minor episodes. I did test positive for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) a few weeks ago. I am supposed to travel tomorrow. The last two nights I have slept well, but the minor cramping scares me. What should I do next? (Someone else in my office experienced bad stomach pain yesterday. I do not have the details, but is it related (meaning more likely virus) or coincidence? Not sure.

Brief Answer:
Gastroenteritis most likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,

Most likely your are having Gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is inflammation of intestinal mucosa. Most commonly caused due to viral infection however it can be a bacterial or protozoal infection also. Diarrhoea, bloating, nausea and vomiting are most common symptoms. Its not necessary that each patient has all symptoms.

I would initially recommend you to go for stool routine and microscopy test to rule out the cause of infection. However as you have to travel tomorrow I would suggest you to take
Loperamide 2mg sos (as and when required) in case diarrhea starts.
For cramping and spasmodic pain i would suggest you to take Dicyclomine along with Mephanemic acid twice daily.Your cramps should settle down with it.
A good quality probiotic like Econorm can be taken twice daily for few days.
A short term course of antibiotic and antiprotozoal can be taken after reports of stool test if required.
During travel keep Metochlorpromide tablet with you in case you start feeling nausea you can take it.
Having some one in the office presenting with same complaint can be just a co incidence or can be indicator of common food or water source contamination.

Hope i answered your queries well.
In case you need any further details feel free to ask i would be happy to help.

Regards.
