Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: My wife has had a soar throat for over a month. She initially thought it was a sinus infection and went in. She was prescribed amoxicillin even though it was probably viral, but that didn't change the condition of her soar throat. She was told that if it was strep throat the amoxicllin would have helped and that strep would have been gone after a month. Some days are worse than others. Sometimes just breathing and having air pass over her throat hurts. Sometimes her throat is swollen and soar to the touch on the surface of the skin below the chin in the neck area. She has occasional congestion, but not significant. She doesn't have any other significant issues. No spots in the back of the throat. No fever, has a decent amount of energy. Body isn't sore. Not a lot coming out of her nose. She coughs occasionally. She's a mother of 3. Eats healthy. Works out regularly but not for a month now. She doesn't take any pills or medication. She has not changed anything recently in her life such as shampoos or perfumes. We live in Florida and have lived here for 6 years with no issues. She doesn't have any allergies. No major medical or chronic issues. She does not drink or smoke, ever. I'm the only guy she's been with. Just trying to give you everything I can think of. She's frustrated. When we look stuff up the first thing she finds with a chronic soar throat is discussion of throat cancer. We're looking for more than the standard recommendations as I fee we have covered our basis.

Brief Answer:
can be reflux disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

From your symptoms GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) is a possibility.

In reflux disease, the contents of the stomach along with the acid in the stomach reflux back into the throat burning the throat causing pain, heartburn and sometimes dry cough. Also in reflux can vary, some days being better than others.

Infection will not last for a month , so that is ruled out.

Please do not worry about cancer, its very very unlikely to be cancer.

I would suggest you meet a physician and discuss the possibility of reflux disease.

Reflux disease will respond very well to antacids and prokinetics. Your physician may also suggest an Upper GI Endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis. It is a 5 minute procedure and almost painless.

Feel free to follow up,
