Suggest Treatment For Severe Sinus Infection With Sneezing

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: I have had a sinus infection for 6 weeks now. I have been to the doctor twice. I have a lot of clear, thick mucus and it at times comes down my nasal passages all at once and strangles me. Lots of sneezing and a low temperature of 97.2 to 97.7 all the time but feel like I am burning up. I am on second type of antibiotic plus in the middle of steroid script for 2nd time. They help especially at night with the drainage. I have severe allergies and live in the south with high humidity and smoke. Had Pneumonia last February and temperature stayed low. How can .i get the temp back up and relief?

Brief Answer:
Sinusitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Though 98.6 is considered a normal body temperature, it can be considered normal at 97.6 i.e a one degree cushion can be permissible. In my experience with sinusitis, inadequate treatment duration is an important factor in recurrence and chronicity. In my patients, who don't respond to single empiric therapy with amoxicillin clavulanate or azithromycin alone, I advise either a quinolone like moxifloxacin for at least 2 to 3 weeks or cefixime along with azithromycin combination. Steam inhalation with a few drops of menthol or vicks twice, nasal decongestants and local steroids like mometasone furoate along with anti histamine combinations of cetirizine and pseudoephedrine would also help resolve the sinusitis. Continue the antibiotics and discuss these options with your ENT doctor.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
