Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: I have a severe rotavirus for two days now and still not seeing relief. The impression from this service is that one will have instant access to a Dr. Chat screen presented also indicates instant access. Then I receive the message that my Question is under peer review. So how long does that take? I feel horrible and peer review is not the answer I am seeking. What is the average response time?

Brief Answer:
Rotavirus

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with the rotavirus infection. There are no antibiotic or antiviral treatments to help the virus. All I can do recommend treatment for the diarrhea and abdominal cramps. The best thing over the counter is imodium AD. This is a medication that will slow down your gut motility and help reduce the cramping and diarrhea. I also recommend avoiding milk and milk products as they can make diarrhea and cramping worse.

For the nausea make sure you drink clear liquids and only sips at a time.

If you have already tried the OTC treatments and not getting better or if you are getting dehydrated then you may need to be seen by a medical provider. They will be able to give your IV fluids and medication.

In summary
1. No medication to treat the infection
2. Try Imodium for diarrhea and abd cramps
3. For nausea clear liquids and sips
4. If dehydrated then be seen by medical provider

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

Thank you dr for the response. Would not the Imodium keep the virus within my system rather than purging it? I tried Pepto-Bismol with no relief. What about acidophilus probiotic with the fluids?

Brief Answer:
Imodium will not prolong infection

Detailed Answer:
The infection will run its course no matter what you do. The imodium will not prolong the problem.

Using acidophilus probiotics will help to regain your prior bacterial counts in your GI tract but also may increase lactose intolerance that can come during the first stages of rotavirus. I would recommend using the probiotics if the diarrhea does not get better by Monday.

Fluids are the real key. This is what will help reduce risk of dehydration and complications of dehydration.
