Suggest Treatment For Severe Rashes And Hives While On Prednisone

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: I have been on Advair for Asthma for 12 years. I haven't been using it as often lately as I have had no breathing problems. Now I have a recurring rash, which has been treated with Prednisone (shots and pills) on three different occasions over the past 6 months. The rash or hives are out of control. My entire body is pretty much covered at some point or another. I went on a water fast for three days and am now eating brown rice in an effort to rid myself of what ever toxins are causing this. And I truly believe that I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms from all the steroids. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to note your symptoms. I see they are bothering you significantly.

Steroid withdrawal has different manifestations on various organ systems.

For example, if one is on high dose steroids for more than 3 weeks and if they are suddenly stopped, then there is a chance for adrenal insufficiency to develop. Adrenal insufficiency results in fatigue, weight loss and low blood pressure.

To prevent this , steroids need to be tapered slowly if they have been used for more than 3 weeks.

The other example of steroid withdrawal would be a skin condition like yours which is controlled with prednisone and upon stopping it, the rash can flare up again. This typically applies to skin conditions that are steroid-responsive.

So long tern 'chronic' steroid treatment may be necessary.

However, this is best determined by a dermatologist. I see you have met a couple of them.
I hope you find a reason for your symptoms.
