default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: My partner has had a cough for 3-4 months...excessive mucous coming up...lots of mucous.
A little later he developed constipation, then diahrea and is not comfortable getting very far from the bathroom. Very unusual for him. We have cancelled having people for dinner and he has a job with a friend waiting but can't be away for log. I'm concerned now...it's been a long time.

Brief Answer:
Gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, it appears to be an inflamed lower gastrointestinal tract that is causing the diarrhea and frequent bathroom visits. It can be precipitated by infections as well as allergens in this case. The chronic cough also needs to be taken into account and worked up for the need of antibiotics.

If there is associated fever, blood in stool, high TLC count and tenesmus then antibiotics should be initiated. Degree of dehydration should be assessed and fluid replacement with isotonic solutions like gastrolyte or ORS should be offered.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
