Suggest Treatment For Severe Panic Attacks With Vomiting

Posted on Thu, 12 Jun 2014
Question: I need to find help for my severe panic attacks with vomiting. I went to Dr Amen's Clinic and was treated for this a few years ago and it was all under control. Now it is getting very bad again started on a plane on the 1st on our way to vacation, ruined a lot of my vacation. I am congested in my head from a bad cold and that makes it hard to breathe through my nose, which is what seems to be triggering them now. Every few minutes and nights that I go into it this way get very bad. I have 1 mg lorazapam and had to take 3 to just get to the edge and they still come frequently, just not as strong and long. I had an attack last 4 days constant one time before my trip to the Amen clinic, with vomiting every few minutes and no sleep. I really do not want to go through that again. How many hours is the lorazapam supposed to last and what is my maximum dosage. I am a 54 year old female, 115# now. I have lost 6 pounds since the plane trip. I also am taking musinex dm 12 hour and otc nasal spray diluted in half with saline solution. I have phenegren and reglan that I can take too for my stomache if I know the proper dosage with the other medications.

Brief Answer:
Better to take antidepressant

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

You have anxiety disorder. May be panic disorder. In that case, panic attacks would not be stopped with lorazepam only. You also need a antidepressant, that would help to control it. In your case, i would suggest paroxetine as an antidepressant. It is one of the best antidepressant in anxiety disorder. You can also carry on lorazepam, but it is short acting. Its half time is 6 to 7 hours and maximum dose in a day is 24 mg. Better to take clonazepam, it has half life up to 14 to 17 hours and help to control anxiety symptoms in better way.

You can also try some relaxation exercise like JPMR or deep breathing exercise. Rest, you can consult your psychiatrist.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.

I had tried several different antidepressants and have not found one that does not make me nervous and sick to my stomach. I need to know how to find a good doctor in my area, since mine retired. I was doing well when she did, and had been for quite a while. So I never got a referral. She thought I was doing well, as I was for quite some time.

Brief Answer:
Take antidepressant at low dose

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Most of antidepressants cause gastric upset and that may also be due to anxiety. You can try an antidepressant at low dosage with antacids. You can also try some relaxation exercise. These exercise are really very effective and helps you to stay calm. You can consult a psychologist for that.

Better to consult a psychiatrist in your area. You can search online or discuss with your doctor about this.

In case, you have more query, you can ask.
