Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Knee After Exercising

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Apr 2017
Question: Hello, Around 3 years ago I was doing a squat with heavy weights and felt a pull on the top lower part of my knee that became painful. I rested for a month or so and the pain went away. However, it happens now every time I overuse my knee, for example walking a mile or two many days in a row. Also I cannot do anything such as dance, running, squats, etc without it aching and possibly becoming injured again. If I overuse it too much something happens where it becomes too painful to walk.

I weigh 175lbs and want to be active, however, I feel like I will re-injure it.

Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Patellar tendinitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

It seems you have patellar tendinitis, patellar tendenopathy, which is inflammation of tendon around knee.

If I am your treating doctor I would do your physical examination and advise you either autologous blood injection, or platelet-rich plasma injection.

So I advise you to visit orthopedic surgeon and discuss all this with him, he may also advise you MRI before doing all this.

Till then avoid squatting, weightlifting etc.

I hope you got the answer.

Thanks,

Thank you for your quick response.

I did some reading and read that certain stretching helps relieve pressure/tension from the knee if done on a regular basis. Also I heard that strengthening the muscles around the knee also helps. Also that bicycling riding is better for knee than walking/running?

Do you have any specific techniques you can offer or point me to resources online?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Quadriceps strengthening exercises are helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the follow-up.

Once the pain subsides, go for bicycling as its best strengthening exercise of knee.

You can also visit Youtube for demo videos of quadriceps muscle strengthening exercise, which are uploaded by physiotherapists.

Please remember, you shouldn't look for quadriceps body building exercises, i.e. no weightlifting exercises, but look for videos like simple home quadriceps strengthening exercise, although subject shown there is old, but these types of exercise are also helpful in young adults.

If still the problem persists then just follow as I explained previously.

I hope you got the answer.

Thanks,
