Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: Regarding foot pain. I am a 65 year old female, 220 pounds and have started a walking program and Nutrisystem to get in better health. After 6 days of doing the 10,000 steps a day, my right foot is very painful when I attempt to walk on it. I had broken the outer metatarsal 2 years ago, but this pain in further back just inn front of the ankle. I was diagnosed then with arthritis in my foot. Can this pain be from the walking I'm doing (arthritis) or should I have it xrayed?

Brief Answer:
Explained signs that would indicate a possible fracture

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

The location where you are describing it is not typical for a stress fracture (fracture that is caused by walking).

Anyway, some other hints that would indicate a fracture is 1) when you can't bare weight at the foot because of the pain, or 2) when it hurts not only when walking but also in silence; 3)if there is a visible deformity 4) if the pain is not getting better in a few days.

You can choose to wait and take care of the foot conservatively, or reassure yourself by making the X-ray.

Some practical things you can do to feel better is to keep the foot elevated, put ice on it, slow down with walking and take painkillers regularly which have also the anti-inflammatory effect.

Hope this is helpful.
