Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In Eye With Watering And Redness

Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: Friday 1/9/15 my 6 yr old eye started running and was blood shot he was in severe pain from it and we left school, it continued and he needed to hold ice on his eye. We went to the pediatrician. After a long exam she decided its not eye related. She sent us to the Dentist on 1/12/15, the dentist said your describing nerve pain but took xrays and said its not dental. He has had about 50 XXXXXXX attacks lasting under a minute and 2 major attacks where he says he is blind from pain and there are thorns coming out his eyes, the pediatrician keeps telling me is just a molar coming in making his eye area hurt, the pain bounces between eyes. He was an appointment with the ophthalmologist but not until 2/3/15. I think it is more serious than his molar coming in. I started getting migraines in 2nd grade. Any thoughts

Brief Answer:
Inflammation of the eyes and migraine needs to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that your 6 year old boy is having severe pain in the eye with watering and redness.
These symptoms of high severity will not occur in dental conditions.
The common causes that needs to be ruled out are inflammation of the eye, migraine headaches....

If possible do send me a photo of the affected eye so that I can have a look and advice you accordingly.

Hope this is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you

Hello Dr. Dadapeer,

Thank you for your thoughts. I thought of a few other things I wanted to add. As I mentioned he has only had 2 long attacks the first lasted several hours and this past Sunday it lasted about an hour. The other 50 or so XXXXXXX attacks usually stop as soon as he applies a bag of water to his eye area. It was an ice pack that melted so its just a bag of room temperature. I find it strange that this gives him relief, even for the longer attacks it gives him relief while it is on. but if he takes it off the pain comes back immediately. I can get a picture of his eye if you think it will help but I think it looks like a typical eye no trauma, the watering and bloodshot eye only lasted the first day of 1/9/15. Again thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
This appears more like migraine headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

I reviewed your history.
From the history and the description you have provided it appears like attacks of migraine headache. Since the eye appears to be normal during the acute phase also, this rules out inflammations of the eye.

The treatment is mainly by the use of analgesic drugs in the acute episode.

Hence I advice you once to consult pediatrician and discuss with him regarding this and for further course of treatment accordingly.

Hope this is helpful to you.
