Suggest Treatment For Severe Muscle Pain In The Armpits

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: This is a bizarre problem. I tried doing a general Web search and found nothing.

For about a week now, whenever I swallow food, drink, etc. I get a pain in my left armpit. Now, this started a day or so after I took a spill at a practice with my roller derby league. I also have general muscle pain on that side.

What could this be? Should I be worried about lymphoma or a serious heart problem? I dont have any nodes that are swolllen. Could this be attributed to GERD symptoms? I have had bad bouts of heartburn in the past, could it be related?

I don't have immediate access to a doctor, so any advice given here would be really appreciated.

Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
Forget about lymphoma or heart problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all please forget about lymphoma or heart issues. Lymphoma does not get such symptoms for sure. general lymph nodes enlargement, night sweating, weakness, weight loss are typical symptoms for lymphoma. Not just a chest pain.

Heart issues are very rare at your age. Moreover, typical for heart is squeezing and burning in the left chest side and numbness of left arm and jaw. Symptoms usually appear after physical activity.

Swallowing is a very complicated process. Lots of muscles are taking part in this process, especially throat muscles. As your symptoms have appeared after some injury, this must be the reason of your symptoms.

Chest pain while swallowing would be something pointing to GERD. But left armpit pain, points rather to muscles problem.
If you have some shortness of breath, pain while breathing, broken rib or in rare cases pneumothorax can be the case. But this gives pain also when moving and breathing, not just when swallowing.

One more thing, muscular pain usually gets better after hot bath or Ibuprophen.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Oh man, what a relief. I do have night sweating, but I am a heavier set person and I've struggled with weight my whole life plus, I have an overly affectionate dog that likes to sleep with me.

I do get heartburn type sensations after eating and my whole upper body is sore, but like you said, I did knock myself around a bit. Okay, I'll keep an eye out on the symptoms and take a couple ibuprofen.

Just to be sure, no worries of anything serious at this time? What can I do to relieve the heartburn sensations? Can GERD (if that's an issue) be reversed/fixed?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
No need to worry at this point for sure.

Heartburn is a symptom of GERD. Stomach acid travels to esophagus and irritates it. This condition can not be reversed. But it can be controlled. The best way to do that is diet. Avoiding fatty foods, coffee (very important), chocolate, orange juices, not eating before sleeping (last meal should be 2 hours before sleeping) in many cases is enough to control GERD.
If diet does not help, antiacids (like Omperasole) are the next step.
If this medicines are also ineffective, gastroscopy should be done and laparoscopic surgery (called fundoplication) should be considered. This procedure can set free from GERD for ever.

Regards.
