default
Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: I am on Xarelto-10 mg for PE, on cranberry caps. for UTI problem, and trying osteobiflex caps. I have severe pain in left knee from osteo arthritis when an xray was taken. I was given a 6 day steroid pak which got me to the point of being able to walk on it but with much pain. I'm suppose to be on crutches but i have no arm strength to use them. Do you know anything else I can safely try to help this knee. I am 60 yrs old, 198 lbs, 5'6. I know I need to lose weight but hard to do with this knee.

Brief Answer:
Take lubricants and use knee brace.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Osteoarthritis can be acutely painful sometimes. The steroid shots help in reducing the inflammation and thus give the pain relief for a few weeks. Application of hot pads can also make the movement possible.
The treatment options include pain killers, hot fomentation, lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin , dycerin, etc and some life style modifications and physiotherapy. You can also add calcium supplements to your diet.
Knee brace can also be used for an earlier and prolonged relief.
In severe cases intra articular injections of hyaluronic acid may be needed after consultation with your orthopaedician.
Exercises like quadriceps strengthening, swimming, straight leg raising will help in improving the muscle strength around the knee and will help in decreasing pain.
I hope this answers your query.

I've been using a heating pad on it at night and whenever I'm sitting down. When you say lubricating agents are you meaning cream or gel?
The osteo bi-flex caps(triple strength) have the glucosamine and chondroitin, Vit. C, Manganese, sodium in it. I did have to go off of it for 5 days due to bladder procedure after I had been on it for 10 days or less which didn't help with supplements. I was also using a blue cream with main ingredients being Menthol and emu oil, herbs,MSM, etc. and a "Stopain cold spray for arthrritis that has similar ingredients as the cream.
I had to look up hot fomentation. Sounds like a hot towel on area. Would that be any different then a heating pad? How much calcium supplements?
Tried a store bought adjustable 4 way strap knee support-moderate support level and it didn't seem to help and seemed to make it hurt more. A lot of the pain is now going into my calf. I can definitely do the straight leg lifts and quad strengthening. It amazingly doesn't look swelled to me.
I will be going back to my doctor who is DO on December 10. Thank you for answering so quickly. I am also going into a chiropractor in the next couple of days as I also have back problems and go in once a month. He is the one who gave me the blue cream.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
By lubricating agents I mean to say glucosamine or Dycerin. Taking Osteo Bi- flex capsules should help. It should have 1500mg of glucosamine.
The cream that you are using is alright. Using a hot towel will be better than a heating pad.
Usually 500mg of daily calcium supplements are needed.
It is better to use an elastic knee support. It will be more convenient.
Hope my answer is helpful.
