Brief Answer:
needs x-ray para nasal sinuses.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that your father is having severe head-ache with nasal congestion.

Answers and solutions for your queries.

1. Sinus head-ache, always dull shooting pain relates to head and face (but not sudden).

2. Sudden pain in elderly person could be due to stress or fluctuating blood pressure or blood sugar or electrolytes imbalance or due to ischemic changes in brain.

3. In my opinion, you need to do x-ray para nasal sinuses (sinusitis), complete blood picture (to rule out infection) and blood tests ( RBS, serum electrolytes). Later comes the medications after confirming the picture.

4. In the mean time, you need to start him on steam inhalation twice daily and mucolytic like mucinex (guiphensin) to thin the secretions and to clear the airways, along with antibiotic (augmentin).

5. Simple, over the counter tab. Acetaminophen 500mg, can be used as pain killer ( best works for head-ache).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
