Brief Answer:
There can be various reasons of hair fall; hypothyroidism is one of them

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I have taken note of your query.

Is the hair fall, diffuse (i.e a from all over the scalp) or is it localized?

Hair fall in females can be due to various reasons. Hypothyroidism is one of the causes.

Most common reasons of diffuse hair fall are:
-Dandruff;
-Preceding illness (e.g jaundice, malaria, dengue) Or Surgery;
-Significant weight loss/dieting;
-Underlying thyroid abnormalities e.g hypothyroidism;
-Dietary factors like nutritional deficiencies and reduced Iron stores;
-Post-partum (after delivery) in females.
-Androgenetic alopecia, in which there is gradual thinning and reduced density over the top of the scalp manifested as widened part width.

Localized hair loss is most commonly due to:
-Alopecia Areata.
Other causes of Localized hair loss are secondary to an underlying skin condition such as:
-Lichen XXXXXXX pilaris (LPP)
-Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE)
-Pseudopelade of brocq

Thanks Doctor,

Its a diffuse .

I can clearly strike of following reasons :
-Dandruff
-Preceding illness (e.g jaundice, malaria, dengue) Or Surgery;
-Significant weight loss/dieting;
-Post-partum (after delivery) in females.

This could be possible cause :
-Underlying thyroid abnormalities e.g hypothyroidism;
-Dietary factors like nutritional deficiencies and reduced Iron stores;
-Androgenetic alopecia, in which there is gradual thinning and reduced density over the top of the scalp manifested as widened part width.

As already mentioned she is having thyroid abnormalities so most likely it would be the cause . Is there a natural remedy (want to avoid medicines as she is pregnant) / precaution that can help.

Brief Answer:
I suggest a diet rich in Iron and Proteins

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

In pregnancy we cannot prescribe Oral medications. However, topically she may use Minoxidil 2% solution twice daily (1ml, morning and evening).
She has to continue with her thyroid treatment.

I advice her to maintain a healthy diet rich in proteins because hair is all protein (she can add egg white, non-veg, cereals, pulses, paneer, milk, soyabean etc).

Since Iron deficiency is common in females, a diet rich in Iron would also help (i.e spinach, peas, sprouts, beans and pulses, dry fruits(raisins, nuts, almonds), non-veg etc.
Besides, her gynecologist will also start her on Oral Iron at appropriate time for her pregnancy, that would also help.

Regards
