Suggest Treatment For Severe Edema

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: My primary care physician wants me to try support hose for edema. (I have not wanted to, but finally agreed to try.) Went to the recommended specialty place. The main person there fitted me, etc., and then said,
“This is very important and doctors don’t know it. You must never ever go to sleep, even for ten minutes, while wearing support hose.”
Was so surprised I really didn’t get his reasoning.
But I know this--my sister-in-law wore support hose for eight years, had to pay the caregiver extra $5 to put them on--she couldn’t deal with them herself. So she wore them from 8 a.m. until bedtime, when her daughter came to prepare her for bed. And she slept, in her recliner and in her bed. And survived, if you called it that, for 8 years.”
It takes me one hour to put them on...neuropathy makes one leg in particular difficult to bend. Takes ten minutes to put on tennis shoes.
My personal doctor wanted me to wear them for 4 hours. Take them off and have legs elevated.
Then try again.
I am exhausted (have parkinsons’,on sinamet, have neuropathy, nothing can be done for that, and have edema.) now,and just counting the minutes until 4 hours is up and I can take them off and leave them off for today!
Could that guy, not a medical person, possibly have been right that it was dangerous to sleep even for ten minutes with them on?

Brief Answer:
Risk of clots or low blood supply to limb

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

Sometimes patients sleep through the entire time and the hose remains, causing risk of clots and low blood supply to the limb.

This is why he mentioned that. But not to worry. It's very rare to encounter such phenomena.

Just remain calm, wear the hose, perform ankle pump exercises and all will be fine.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Will have to think about what other questions I have.
Dread the ordeal of putting them on, but I do think it felt better.

will write again if I have other puzzlements, and thank you for your kind and supportive attitude and clearly explained advice.
