Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough With Dizziness
Question: I have a hard cough and when I cough and my eyes are closed I see flashes of light and I get extremely dizzy.

Hard coughing could be due to upper respiratory tract infection like pharyngitis or laryngitis or may be acute bronchitis but it should be evaluated further by clinical examination and various tests.
As you have already visited doctor and he must have ordered some routine blood works and X- ray chest with sputum examination which will be helpful to make diagnosis clear whether it is due to some bacterial or viral infection or some allergic.
Flashes of light with dizziness during severe coughing could be due to cough itself or cough variant asthma but it is not the big issue,as it will get subsided with your coughing.
You should take,
1) Antibiotics (quinolones group preferably levofloxacin 500 mg) for at least 5 to 7 days course to prevent infection.
2) Analgesics and anti-inflammatory combinations like paracetamol 325 mg with ibuprofen 400 mg to reduce pain and inflammation.
3) Antihistamines in combination with mast cell stabilizers (montelukast and levocetrizine) to combat dry cough and to prevent formation of inflammation in throat.
4) Also,you will require to take steroid nebulizer (budesonide respules) 3 to 4 times a day with steam inhalation to prevent inflammation and further episodes of severe coughing.
You can also take inhaler frequently (rotahaler or metered dose inhaler) in place of nebulizer.
5) Avoid cold water and cold items like ice-cream etc.
Your treating physician or pulmonologist will know about all this.
With this treatment,your coughing will improve gradually as the inflammation subsides.
