Question: My son has no movement in his intestines to have a bowl movement. He is taking duculox and his recent ct scan showed nothing and so did the colonoscopy show nothing wrong. After the ct scan the doctor prescibed him constella and he is not able to have a bowl movenent and takes duculox in addition. His intestines are non functioning.

He has been told to eat fibre which he always has but the food isnt the problem, its just he has no movement in his bowls or small intestine to have a bowl movement without the aid of the laxative.

Brief Answer:
Supportive care

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

A history of constipation where all the work up for secondary causes being normal, makes this a primary constipation and needs to be managed supportively only with no worries.

Get colonic transit studies to assess movements, status of bowels and also manometry studies to have an idea of the sphincteric tones. keep using fiber at least 35 gm a day. Use more exercises, at least 35 hours a week. Don't resist the urge to have bowel movements.

If these are painful getting evaluated for local causes like anal fissure needs to be evaluated as well. Using a probiotic such as bifidobacterium or lactobacillus which may be helpful, but more studies are needed. Fructooligosaccharide, a sugar that occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables, may be helpful as well. Stay in touch with your gastroenterologist and let them decide what is best for your son.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself.

Hope I have answered your query.
