Question: my two yr old daughter is having severe congestion in the chest. she has cough but no fever. we had gone to our native where it is very hot and humid. and our travels were in ac. 4-5 days went continuously like this. I think that's the reason she had slight change in her voice too. her sleep and meals were also disturbed during travel. so she is a bit tired too. wat medicine should I give her for congestion relief? we can hear it from her coughing. her cough is not very severe.
Brief Answer:
Seems like bronchiolitis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
It seems like bronchiolitis. But she does not have fever, so it can also be allergy or asthma. A throat swab, complete blood count will help in diagnosis.
I need to know a few details to narrow the diagnosis.
Does she have a history of allergy or asthma?
Does she have difficulty in breathing?
Is she having cough? does she wheeze during cough? How many bouts of cough does she have during day and night?
Is she getting sputum? If so, which colour?
In such a scenario I usually prescribe the following:
- Syrup cetrizine 0.5 ml once or twice a day depending on the symptoms (this medicine is antiallergic and helps reduce the secretions in the airways)
- Syrup asthalin 2 ml three times a day (This is a bronchodilator and helps dilates the airways for better breathing)
These medicines are to be taken as needed (if symptoms are happening)
You may also give her soft food to eat and pure water to drink. Her congestion should clear with this medicine. If it does not start to clear in two days or her symptoms get worse, then she needs a visit to a doctor.
Hope it helps.

her grand father has asthma. the climate over here is allergic to almost 80% people. she doesn't have difficulty in breathing. she is having cough like twice or thrice in the day since 3 days . as of now there is no sputum but once very small amount of sputum came. couldn't notice color though. wasn't too yellow I guess. once a doc had told wen she had fever that it was due to allergy. and had given Allegra and asthalin. I m giving her now cetrizine.
Brief Answer:
Inhaled bronchodilators are better
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
She should get better on these medicines as these medicines work on viral as well as allergies. In the meanwhile give her pure water to drink. Inhaled bronchodilators are better choices than syrup of bronchodilator. If the symptoms persist longer than 2 - 3 days, it is better to give her inhalers or nebulizers than syrup asthalin. You will need a written prescription.
Hope it helps.
