Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I was admitted into hospital at the beginning of XXXXXXX this year, suffering from excruciating lower back pain. I was diagnosed with discitis, a biopset was taken from an area of infection, and after the culture was grown, the correct antibiotics were given through a Hickman line. I was bed ridden for several weeks due to pain, and had to learn how to re mobilise with the help of physiotherapy.
I was discharged from hospital at the end of August, and community nurses administered my antibiotic daily until two weeks later I was rushed back into hospital with an infection in my Hickman which was removed, and I spent a further 9 days in hospital!
Since then, I am taking a large number of oral antibiotics, and painkillers. My mobility is slowly improving, but only slowly. I still have pain in my back, it feels like a stiffness as though someone has put a board across it, and I finding a comfortable position when sleeping is hard to do. I have also started suffering from oedema in my feet and lower legs for which I have been prescribed water tablets. I have days when I feel like I might be making headway with every thing, and days when I feel like things are worse. From being a fit woman in her late 40's I feel like an old lady.
My question is this. Will things really get better? Will I ever get back to some normality, bearing in mind that I first took ill at the start of June? I want to get back to work and function like a real human being again....it's depressing.

Brief Answer:
You will be normal in 2 months XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi Madam,

I have read your query and concern.

As per your clinical history, you seem to be on the improving note, getting better day by day.

So far you have been completely cleared of infection through a meticulous approach through the Hickman's line for the discitis.

Since the problem is the vertebral column, the healing will be slow, due to high degree of the post infection sequelae prevailing in the form of paravertebral muscle spasm and hypertonia with some degree of fibrosis across the articular joints of the spine.

All the above abnormalities would slowly correct to keep you back on track.

Its just a matter of time, you will be back soon with complete health.

With right physiotherapy and medication, complete normalcy can be expected in 1-2 months period from here on.

So be spirited and active.

Post your further queries,if any.
Thank you.
