Suggest Treatment For Sensorineural Anosmia Symptoms After Recovering From Mononucleosis

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: Hi , I have a sickly sweet smell in my nose, I've had it for 7 months. I had Mono back in March, a couple of weeks later I lost my smell. Everything smells the same, from gasoline to pizza. I went to a doctor in April and he gave me some antibiotics which didn't work. Then I started doing the flip turn nasal flush as recommended by the Mayo Clinic. That didn't work. I have been using Mupriocin nasal cream for the last 7 days, but has had little effect.
I have no other symptoms,
I thought it is golden staf,
Should I continue with the nasal cream,
Please help .
Kind Regards

Brief Answer:
Add systemic and local steroid

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
I have gone through your query; it suggests that you may be suffering from sensorineural anosmia due to the infectious mononucleosis. Viral infection may damage the neuroepithelium.

In this condition I personally suggest systemic and local nasal steroids to recover damage of the neuroepithelium after consulting with your doctor.

But to rule out other disease you may also go for
1. UPSIT
2. Electrophysiological test and
3. Radiographic testing such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging if needed.

Thanks
