Question: Hi Doctor,

I have a question related to my daughter's health, she is 2 yrs. and 7 months and suffering from running nose with occasional fever .. I have been giving her Ibugesic Plus with Chericoff and her fever used to come down with sweat .. she had fever day before yesterday evening .. she also has running nose ..

While she is playful and joyful, but last night she had fever and loads of cough due to which she couldn't sleep ..

Hope there is nothing to worry, as nowadays with so many news and information, I am little scared ..

Looks like viral illness and cough

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I understand your concern. The news you are referring to - I suspect - is regarding Swine flu if I am not mistaken. If the kid is active in between 2 fever episodes and not breathless - you need not worry. Sore throat, sever body pains, diarrhea and vomiting are the other symptoms of Swine Flu.

The best way to rule out is - high index of clinical suspicion and getting a nasopharygeal aspirate for H1N1 PCR at a reputed laboratory.

95% of kid's illness are viral and do not need any antibiotics as such. Viral fevers start and stay for 4-7 days. But the most important point is that the kid will be active in between 2 fever episodes. When the fever is settling there will be slight exacerbation of cough and this is also a recovery symptom of viral illness.
