Question: Our baby was affected by mild fever with cold and severe cough which was detected as viral fever and medicine (flucold drops, paracetamol, Doxcef-100)were prescribed. The baby is 8 month old and weight 9.4 k.g .After two days of medication he was little better but still has his chesty cough which is so painful to watch. Then we asked doctor to give him the nebuliser treatment to get him some relief. He was given salbair neb and budate for about 10 minutes only. Then later in the evening on the same day at home by others advice we gave ipravent 0.5ml+ asthalin 0.5ml+ sodium chloride solution (NS) 1ml. After giving that we noticed dizziness and sleepy. On the same day we had also given doxcef two hours before nebuliser treatment. Our boy doesn't have any asthma or any bronchial problem. Now we are so worried about that nebuliser treatment we just wanted to clear his cough. Is there any side effect? Is the sleepiness due to the antibiotic or nebuliser treatment? What should we do now?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear XXXX
Majority of respiratory infection are viral in origin and self limiting. All that it is required is symptomatic treatment. There is some amount of bronchospasm during to airway hyper reactivity in infants so Asthalin nebulisation is given. The drowsiness is definitely not due to either antibiotics nor nebulisation. Relief provided with nebulisation could have put the baby to sleep. Allow him to sleep, when he wakes up ensure adequate hydration and nutrition.

I usually recommend plain normal saline nebulisation , which is also equally effective. If the following criteria are fulfilled then there seems to be no cause for concern

1. Baby accepting feeds well
2. Respiration is normal and not hurried
3. Sleeps well after feeds
