Suggest Treatment For Resistant Yeast Infection

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: Hi there; I have a resistant yeast infection. I started with 3 days of Canestan. When that did not work I took Diflucan. That did not work, back to the doctor he put me on Diflucan every 3 days for 3 pills in a row. That still did not work so I'm on boric acid for over a week now and still getting a lot of discharge but it also still contains white discharge along with watery discharge. Getting a bit concerned here. What are your thoughts on after 4 weeks of therapy and still not getting past this infection? Or could I have white discharge after the infection has cleared? I've even cut out all wheat and sugar. I do not have a history of yeast infections nor am I right now experiencing external discomfort. I had one yeast infection in July for the first time in 12 years after using antibiotics a few times this year. It seemed Diflucan took it away without problem then and never had problems before. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
You need to do vaginal swab

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern and I will try to help you.

This situation that you describe is common and the reasons are:

1.The symptoms may not be due to thrush.
There are other causes of a vaginal discharge.
Also, thrush can occur at the same time as another infection.
You may need tests such as vaginal swabs (samples taken using a small ball of cotton wool on the end of a thin stick) to clarify the cause of the symptoms.
2.Most bouts of thrush are caused by C. albicans.
However, about 1 in 10 bouts of thrush are caused by other strains of Candida .
These may not be so easily treated with the usual anti-thrush medicines.
3.You may not have used the treatment correctly.
4.You may have had a quick recurrence of a new thrush infection.

Hence get a vaginal swab done, a week after you stop treatment to determine the cause of white discharge and to treat in the proper way.

But if you have only white discharge without any of these symptoms ,like;
itching, swelling or redness of genitals ,don't worry so much.

Make vaginal douches with apple vinegar for 2 to 3 times per day and use more yogurt.

Hi there;
Thanks for your reply. I did have a vaginal swab done; they said yeast but couldn't tell me the type which was unfortunate. I'll make an appointment to get another one done and see if they will type it. Question on the apple vinegar douche. Is it possible to spread infection to the cervix with a douche? I'm also curious if taking the 150MG over the counter Diflucan would have been strong enough for this or are the other strains simply not curable with Diflucan? If not are there other drugs even available? Also on a side note, I had a low level odor that is unusual for me in the past 3/4 years. During the infection I had a sweet odor which I know to be the yeast. Currently I have no odor at all, which is really good. I feel that maybe I had been really out of balance anyway and it was just a matter of time. Wondering your thoughts on this theory and thanks for your help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

Apologies for late reply.

Don't worry about apple vinegar as infection can't spread to your cervix, but I recommend you to stop all the medications before getting a vaginal swab.

Dosage of diflucan is correct but there are some candida species that are not sensitive to diflucan or resistant. The drug which they are sensitive can only be prescribed after knowing the type of yeast.

Low level odour may be due to some form of imbalances in your vagina, better for you to use a course of probiotics.

Get a vaginal swab done and then we can discuss again.

All the best
