Suggest Treatment For Pulsating Sensation On The Muscles

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Apr 2015
Question: I felt a pulsating sensation on the muscle that attatches the mandible to the skull. With that pulsating sensation, my cheek and left side of my lips had a numb like sensation ( it was not numb but has a similar sensation to being numb). To note, I've been under a fair bit of stress from studies and this happend while studying. Seated HR was 68bpm. I am curious to possible causes and if there is need to get a check up for CVD?

I'm a male, 23 years old, BMI 25, I'm active

Brief Answer:
CVD not likely

Detailed Answer:
I read you question carefully and I understand your concern.

I don't think those symptoms are suggestive of CVD, they are not typical for stroke, it usually has other manifestations like weakness in the limbs, balance and coordination issues etc. You also do not have the typical age to be affected by stroke. There are some vessel diseases which can involve external cranial vessels like arteritis, but again not at your age.
With that symptom description I would look first for dysfunction of the temporo-mandibular joint, or other issues related to the teeth or ear. For that a physical exam is necessary by a dentist and/or a ear-nose-throat specialist or your GP.
If those conditions are excluded, if I were to look for a neurological condition (apart from anxiety due to the stress which you mentioned), at your age, it would need to be searched for the possibility of multiple sclerosis. I don't think it likely, usually manifests in a different manner, but a neurological exam should be done for other sign you might miss and if any other signs are found MRI imaging would be considered.

I remain at your disposal for further questions.
