Suggest Treatment For Pulled Nerve In Lower Back

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Sep 2014
Question: I have some sort of nerve pulled in my back, not the sciatic nerve as per the physio. Lower left side. I have been examined for kidney stones too.. As per the x-rays and sonographies there is no stone. I have then been to a physio too who after several different exercises cannot figure out how to cure me of the pain.

If at rest I bend to the right side, i.e opposite of the pain I feel the uncomfortable pull. If i stand for normal amounts of time like while cooking then the pain increases..

Brief Answer:
Following measures will help with the pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

From description , it seems you might developed muscular or ligamentous strain over back .
As your pain is persistent ,I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. You may get the MRI of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Meanwhile following measures will help with the pain
• Lie on a hard bed.
• Anti -inflammatory drugs like Tablet Motrin 1 tablet as and when required
• Avoid forward bending.
• Avoid strenuous activity & lifting heavy weights.
• Apply diclofenac gel on the affected area. Warm compresses will also help.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have this particular pain for the last 1.5 years till date. The pain radiates outward to the hip area and feels like it is very deep seated.

Brief Answer:
Might be due to pinched nerve at lower spine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query again.

Based on your description, this is most probably because of a pinched nerve at lower spine.

Common cause is bulging intervertebral discs in the vertebral column that compress on the nerves as they come out of the spinal cord - symptoms are experienced along the area of distribution / path of that particular nerve.

Here the treatment varies from conservative to surgery. Conservative treatment includes anti-inflammatory medications (pain killers), physical therapy or chiropractic treatment, and avoiding activity that strains the back. Majority of radiculopathy patients respond well to this conservative treatment and symptoms often improve within six weeks to three months.

I would suggest you to see a spine specialist who will take into account severity of your symptoms and if needed advise Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to guide about the treatment.

Mean while painkillers such as motrin twice a day can help to relieve pain. So is warm compresses and proper rest useful. Try them as you plan an appointment

Wishing you good health.

Warm regards..

Brief Answer:
Part of degenerative lumber disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

These symptoms are part of degenerative lumber disease. It increases the risk of disc herniation & spinal canal stenosis.

The main treatment of such pain is bed rest along with pain killers and muscle relaxants. Muscle relaxants can help with your symptoms if used in appropriate dosage in combination with a potent analgesic.
You can get the appropriate drugs prescribed from your Orthopedician after examination.
Meanwhile you can follow these measures:
- If the pain is severe, you need bed rest till the pain resolves.
- Get some analgesics prescribed and apply analgesic spray or ointments.
- While resting, keep a pillow under your knees if it doesn't bother you.
- Avoid forward bending and lifting heavy objects.
- Back strengthening exercises and stretching exercises daily as advised by a Physiotherapist.
- Avoid exercises in times of pain.
- Improvise your posture while sitting.
- Using an LS contour belt of appropriate size might be helpful in providing support to back muscles.
Also, maintain a proper posture while working, sitting and standing. Keep your back straight.
