Suggest Treatment For Prostate Cancer

Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: My husband has prostate cancer and has been getting shots from a Florida urologist that minimize the production of testosterone. Our local urologist does not seem to know about this type of treatment. My husbands PSI went from a high of 10.6 down to .06. We are back in MA now and need to find a urologist nearby that can continue the treatment. We are willing to travel up to 30 miles for a doctor that is familiar with this treatment. Do you know where we could find one?

Brief Answer:
Anti-androgen hormone therapy is known mode of treatmnt for prostate cancer

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Your MA doctor might be unaware, but anti-androgen hormone therapy is a known mode of treatment for prostate cancer. Going through the following links should enlighten you in this regard:
http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/antiandrogens-for-prostate-cancer
http://m.cancer.org/cancer/prostatecancer/detailedguide/prostate-cancer-treating-hormone-therapy
http://m.cancer.gov/topics/factsheets/prostate-hormone-therapy-fact-sheet

Your husband has responded well to the treatment and I do not think that the course of further treatment should be long. Perhaps your Florida doctor would ask you to check PSA levels periodically and would probably ask for reinitiating treatment in case PSA ever goes above 10. So, I guess that you could remain under the care of the same doctor. But there are other options available in Massachusetts. Just type in "Massachusetts oncology" and search on Google and you would get to choose from a number of centres. You can choose the one convenient to you.

About the incontinence and other minor problem, you would need to remain under the follow up of a local healthcare provider.

Hope that helps.

Which oncologists in our area near zip code 01830 would treat prostate cancer with anti-androgen? This should probably just be considered part of my original request.

Brief Answer:
Most oncologists follow the standardized treatment regimens.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back.

May be the following map would enable to find an oncologist in your area:
https://www.google.co.in/maps/search/massachusetts+01830+oncologist/@42.0000,-71.0000,12z/data=!3m1!4b1

You see that I am not from your local area and it would be impossible for me or somebody else to be acquainted to the doctors individually. So, it is not possible to determine who amongst them prefers which treatment regimens. All I can say is that most oncologists follow the same treatment with anti-androgens and so there should not be a problem.

In case you found my answer helpful, please close the thread with a positive review and a 5 star rating.
