Brief Answer:
Plenty to drink and Laxatives

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXX,
How are you? Thank you for writing to HCM today. My name is Dr Suresh Raghavaiah and I hope to help you today.
Constipation is a very common problem experienced by a lot of people. Luckily, barring any underlying pathology, it is very easy to treat.
The first thing I advise my patients to do is to drink a minimum of 5-6 litters of fluids per day. It could be water, fruit juices, mild, yogurt or in any other form, but this is the easiest thing to do to relieve constipation.
The next thing to do is to eat some high fiber diet - I advise my patients to eat a banana / XXXXXXX or a papaya which are rich in finer and helps in softening the stools. Please have a serving of this every night before going to bed .
In addition, going by your symptoms, the constipations seems to be severe. So I would advise you to take some over the counter laxatives (milk of magnesia, Liquid paraffin, Lactulose, etc). I advise my patients to start with 15 ml once a day before going to sleep. If this does nt help, then increase dosage to 30ml and even if this doesn't solve it, then 30 ml twice a day. So all my patients increase or decrease the dose as necessary and I am sure you will figure out a dosage agreeable with you.
regarding the pain in the ribs, I would advise you to avoid any kind of narcotics for the pain as all narcotics worsen the constipation.

I do understand that you are a diabetic, and usually uncontrolled diabetics suffer from damage to the nerves which cause constipation. But the recipe I have given you is yet to fail me.

Please do let me know if this helped and if you need any further clarification.

Have a great day
