Suggest Treatment For Post Nasal Drip And Sinus Headaches

Question: I have deviated nasal septum. Right nostril is partially blocked. I don't have any problem with breathing (may be some times in the morning or while doing exercise). I am continuously suffering from post nasal drip, which is causing granular pharyngitis. Also some times suffering from sinus headache. I am taking Lasma LC and Memoflo nasal spray. Is it possible to have PND this way?

Thanks for posting the query

After going through the symptoms described by you, I am of the opinion that you could be suffering from allergic rhinitis.

The sensation of postnasal drip can also be noticed in a condition of the throat known as Laryngopharyngeal reflux. This happens when the acid from the stomach regurgitates into the throat causing constant irritation of the throat and the sense of postnasal drip.

You need to continue the present set of medications and request your doctor to perform a flexible nasopharyngoscopy to evaluate the nasal passages, the throat and the larynx. Also, you would require a CT Scan of the paranasal sinuses to evaluate the pathology in the sinuses.

GERD was tested by endoscopy and nothing significant found. CT Scan was done. Found right nostril partially blocked. Hyper turbine. ENT specialist said pnd is due to DNS. Recently I am taking nasal spray regularly and not facing any trouble for breating. But still has pnd.

Thanks for writing back. I sincerely apologize for the delay in answering.

The partial nasal block could be one of the reason behind the PND. The narrowed part of the nose reduces the airflow leading to the secretions getting trapped. The trapped secretions gently trickle down into the throat causing irritation of the throat. Secondly, you would have got accustomed to the mouth breathing because of the partial nasal block, which dries up the throat causing irritation and sense of post nasal discharge.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Continue with the steroid nasal spray.
2. Try using saline nasal spray as frequently as possible. This helps in easy clearance of the nasal secretions, thus reducing the PND.
3. Do steam inhalation at least a couple of times in a day, for at least 2-3 minutes.

Thanks for your elaborated reply. I have the final question, how to reduce the granular pharyngitis? Shall I take any antibiotic for it?

Treatment of granular pharyngitis is aimed at treating the inciting factor. In your case, it's the partial nasal obstruction and the allergy which has to be taken care of. Drink plenty of warm water. Warm water increases the blood circulation and reduces the inflammation over the mucosa. You can try doing gargles with dilute povidone iodine. This will help in reducing the inflammation and the granulations.
