Suggest Treatment For Post Nasal Drip And Recurrent Cough

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2016
Question: I am experienced issues with post nasal drip turning into thick mucus plugs that need to be coughed up from my throat. Definitely no congestion in chest. Chest X-ray from a few months back shows clear lungs. It often interferes with speech until I cough it up. Usually 5 - 10 times a day of expelling. Can be clear or slightly colored (not enough to be infection.) This has been ongoing for 6 months. in that time, I have been traveling from a dry climate to a hot, humid climate, being in one place 3 weeks at most. In my opinion, that rules out allergies to pollens and air pollution. I have a deviated septum and wonder if that factors in at all. I have lowered my daily nicotine addiction to approx. 7 cigarettes per day, from twice that. Did not notice any difference.

Brief Answer:
Post nasal drip and recurrent cough due to it is allergic

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,

Post nasal drip and recurrent cough due to it is allergic.

If it was due to deviated septum, you would be choked up severely.

The cause is coming from stomach. Since it has been going on for 6 months, try to identify what changes you have made in your diet. Most allergies are protein related--peanuts, big legumes, non vegetarian products etc.

Smoking can definitely add on to it. In any case you know it is bad for the respiratory system. Continue to cut it down.

So I would like you to try and identify the food allergen/intolerance. Try avoiding the items mentioned by me. There is a chance it could be other things.

Saline drops are safest.

Try ginger in any form to help digestion and prevent colds.

An anti allergic like Fexofenadine for a few weeks should help (pleasee get the necessary prescription from your doctor).
