default
Posted on Fri, 26 Sep 2014
Question: I continually feel the need to clear my throat . There is some flem but nothing significant. No fever, feel fine. Seems to be better after I take an Allegra but not completely normal. It has been going on about two months.
I have never really had any seasonal allergies.

Brief Answer:
This is caused by postnasal drip!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. They are very suggestive of postnasal drip which is one of the leading causes of chronic unproductive cough. This is more common in persons with allergies who tend to have sinus and nasal passages inflammation which drain to the back of the neck. As the secretions drip into the oropharynx, they cause irritation leading to cough with minimal phlegm.

The standard treatment consisting in administering antihistamines like Allegra and a cough decongestant like carbocysteine. Go ahead, try these and report progress to me.

In all, possible postnasal drip. Take Allegra and carbocysteine and report progress to me.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you. I will try the cough medicine as well as the Allegra. I do not have any nasal congestion and have not all summer. Still same diagnosis? Thanks.
