Brief Answer:
different possible causes

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Persisting sore throat can be related to several causes such as : (1) post nasal drip, this can be silent (not detected) in 1 out of 5 persons who have it.

The drip of mucus to the back of the throat causes inflammation which would be associated with soreness

Treatment with decongestant/anti histamine combination would help along with a topical steroid nasal spray (Eg nasonex, nasocort, flonase, rhinocort)

(2)GERD- severe reflux can be associated with sorethroat as well in some persons

(3)smoking

(4) cancer- cancer of the throat can also cause this symptom. This would be more common if there is a history of smoking, though it also occur other wise

(5)infection- this would not normally persist for several months however.

Since the sore throat has been ongoing for several months, then it would be best to see your doctor or an ENT specialist for assessment.
An ENT doctor would be best because he or she would have the equipment in office to take a better look at the throat.

Treatment would depend on the cause found.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
