Suggest Treatment For Persistent Heaviness In Chest

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: Over the past few weeks I have a constant and increasing heaviness/pressure/tightness in my chest. It does not change with exercise or rest. I had a bad cough a couple of months ago and the coughing hurt my lungs. After the cough went away, I had somewhat sharp pains for a week or two afterwards - it felt like I had torn a chest muscle coughing. Prior to the cough I had no awareness of chest pain, so I originally thought this tightness was the remnants of the cough, but it does not appear to be fading.

Brief Answer:
might be muscle spasm; also get an ECG done

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
From your history, it looks like you had a muscle spasm following bouts of cough. Although cardiac problems should be ruled out. If such a patient came to me, I would have suggested the following

Rest.
Avoiding heavy weight lifting.
Deep breathing exercises.
Painkiller tablets with muscle relaxant combination.
Antacids or pantoprazole alongwith.
An Xray chest PA view to rule out lung pathology or any bony injury.
An ECG and/or echocardiography to rule out cardiac problem.

You can consult your family doctor about it and for prescription of the above.

Hope this was useful.
Regards.
