Question: Hi,
My 6months old baby girl is having fever from last 3 days.
we went to hospital yesterday for checkup.
Doctor recommended some blood and urine test for finding out the issue.
its now almost 24hrs since we have started the medication for her.
She is having some conjestion in the nostril as we can hear the breathing sound very clearly with blockage.

1. We are finding some rashes on her body from yesterday evening. Is it because of medicine or is it the effect of viral infection?
2. today morning around 6.00am & afternoon around 3.30pm when i checked the temperature i found the temperature to be around 100 degree. is it normal to get temperatures now and then after starting the medicine.
3. is it ok to gives babies calpol continuously for 2-3 days as doctor told that these kind of viral infection can last for 2-3 days and we have to give the medicine basis the temperature condition. She also asked to apply wet cloth on body and head to reduce the temperature.
4. I m also worried about the medicines which we are giving to the infant . will all these medicine case problem to her body?
The medicine prescribed are
1. Calpol 3~4 times a day basis the intensity of temp.
2. Maftal P_ (SOS) .. we have not given this medicine yet as its was told to be given if the temp is not going down after taking calpol.
3. Sinarest AF 1-1-1
4. Nasoclear after every 2 hrs.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to a viral infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Some children are more prone to catching cold and recurrent episodes are seen. Often such viral infections manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to get your child evaluated by her doctor.

The medicines are proper. However, you need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block.

Let me address the issues one by one:

1. Rashes are very commonly encountered in viral infections. Nothing to be concerned about.

2. and 3. The fever can continue for the next few days despite the medicines. If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol (Calpol) to it bring down. Also use tepid sponging. If paracetamol is not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) which is more effective. The minimum gap between two doses of Crocin is 4-6 hours. The doses of Crocin and Meftal P are independent of each other. Minimum gap between doses of Meftal P is 6-8 hours. However, I do not think that they would be needed to be used simultaneously.

4. These medicines are frequently used and you need not worry about problems to her body.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Regards
