Suggest Treatment For Persistent Ear Pain

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: Dear Doctor, I felt pain in my left ear since last 2-3 years. Intensity of the pain varies. I consulted an ENT doctor. I thought the pain is because of the heavy use of cell phone. But he suggests, it's not like that. He suggested to use better-quality cell-phone and also to change the carrier (service provider). I did not change the carrier, but tried to use head phone as far as I can. The ear pain reduces a lot. Recently, since last 2-3 months I also feel pain, (sometimes sharp and sometimes mild) in the brain/head along with the ear in the same side. Sometimes, I also get pain in the left eye. What it could be? Is there any tumor in the brain?

Brief Answer:
These are not symptoms of tumors.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Get your ears examined again, get a PTA (Pure Tone Audiometry) and an Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry) done.

2. Very high cell phone usage can cause discomfort as this is microwave radiation, which generates heat and sometimes also due to pressure on the external ear (pinna). This is also common with the use of headphones.

3. These are not the symptoms of tumors.

4. The ear is supplied sensation by many nerves that also supply sensation to many other structures in the head, neck chest and upper abdomen. hence, if the ear examination and hearing tests are normal, these pains can be referred pains from some other area. A Neurologist's, a Dentists's and an Eye specialist's opinion will also be useful since you also get pain in the left eye.

5. Upload the test results and clinical notes of these specialists for discussing further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
