Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough And Post Nasal Drip

Posted on Wed, 16 Nov 2016
Question: My wife wakes up every morning and begins to cough and gag from what appears to be a colorless mucous. She has been tested for allergies(has dust mite allergy) and given antibiotics for possible lung infection. She can sometimes snore endlessly and sometimes not at all. She also suffers from nose bleeds 2 to 3 times a month. Any ideas?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Your wife's symptoms are likely to be due to a post nasal drip, due to excess secretion being formed in the back of the nasal passage and trickling down to the throat making her cough and gag. The degree of snoring would depend on the amount of secretion and narrowing of the passage.
An antihistamine tablet like Desloratidine and mometasone nasal spray at bed time may be helpful in relieving her symptoms.
