Suggest Treatment For Persistent Bronchitis And Upper Respiratory Infection

Posted on Thu, 2 Apr 2015
Question: Multiple infections -- I've had bronchitis and upper respiratory infection for almost 5 weeks now and we can't seem to get it cleared up completely. I've been on 3 different antibiotics for it but am still coughing up thick, yellow mucous. Last week we discovered that I had a UTI. On a culture, it was growing >100,000 colonies (?) Of citrobacter. I've been on ciprofloxacin for a week to clear up that infection and have 3 days left on the antibiotics. Now just a while ago I discovered that I have an infection in a breast biopsy incision from January 27th. There was one little stitch that was sticking up and I noticed the skin was red around it. I took a pair of tweezers to see if the stitch would pull out and when I pulled on it, thick pus began rolling out. Needless to say, I'll be calling my doctor in the morning but is there something more concerning that I should be worried about here. Could there be some hidden infection somewhere that is feeding all these unrelated areas? I've started a diagnostic process with a hematologist to try and figure out why my WBC and neutrophils have been elevated for more than a year (last weeks CBC SHOWED 21,000 for WBC and 17,000 for neutrophils. Once he found the UTI, he kind of put everything on hold until I can be off all antibiotics and prednisone for 2 weeks and then he will do another CBC and if the counts are still elevated, will do a bone marrow biopsy. He also ordered a CT of abdomen and pelvis, which came back normal. Are we missing something here? In light of the pussy drainage, is there something else we should be looking at? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
bone marrow and blood culture can help you...

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your response to the question.

I recommend you to do bone marrow biopsy with culture and blood culture and its antibiotic sensitivity pattern.

If the report will say that it is citrobacter than the nidus of the all the infection will be the same. That you are having all the infection from the single source.

Taking the antimicrobials according to the report will cure you completely. Please take the drug under doctors guidance. Completed course of drug can cure you completely.

Blood will act as a vehicle to circulate the organisms all over the body. So if the nidus is treated than everything will be cured by antibiotic therapy.

If it's different organisms than we have to look for the other source of infection and it's treatment.

Please maintain good hygiene surrounding to you like hand washing, clean clothing etc. This will equally help in treating the infection.

You can ask me for further clarification.

Thank you
Dr Arun Tank.
