Question: antibiotic for nasal cartilage or perichondritis

Answered by Dr. Sumit Bhatti (44 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
IV antibiotics, Penicillin and Fluoroquinolone groups, C/S.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Since cartilage has poor blood supply, oral antibiotics do not easily reach the site.

2. I would recommend that you get this examined and take IV antibiotics, especially if you have diabetes.

3. The Beta Lactam (Penicillin) group and the Fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics would be ideal as they have a good spectrum and penetration. Higher antibiotics are also available in case the infection is spreading. The choice can also be made on culture sensitivity (C/S) reports if there is a wound (traumatic).

4. Another important point is that the nasal cartilage forms part of what is known as the 'dangerous area of the face' - along with the upper lip. Infection from here can spread to the eye and brain rapidly. Hence these should be treated early and aggressively.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
