Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: My daughter is living in Guadalajara and has been diagnosed as having parasites in her stomach. She has been on a course of antibiotics over a period of ten days. She has had a stool sample tested etc. Consequently she has been back to the doctor who advises she needs to have another course of drugs. She is concerned about this. She has been prescribed Bactocin 400mg - 1 every day of 10 days. Flagenase 3 capsules a day, micostatin 3 tablets a day. Omeprazol 20mg 2 tablets a day. She has not started this round of tablets. She is worried because she feels very unwell. Asking advice is this okay for her to take these tablets . I am in Melbourne Australia. Look forward to receiving a response. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Not enough information to tell.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It is hard to answer your question not knowing what kind of parasite does she have.
However according to mentioned medicine, she is being treated for Helicobacter Pylori infection. This is not a parasite. This is a bacteria responsible for peptic ulcers formation. The eradication of this bacteria is very important in case of peptic ulcers. And it is quite characteristic for H.Pylori eradication to cause side effects like nausea, general illness, lack of appetite.
To determine if the first treatment was successful, stool test is not a good idea. She should rather have a gastroscopy with H.Pylori test.
But still we have only a handful of information about her results. This makes her doctor much more trustworthy than my opinion.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

These are intestinal parasites . This will be the second lot of drugs she will be taking . There are four lots of tablets to be taken over ten days. Should she take them she wants to know because they make her feel so sick. Will they have an impact on her digestive system in the future. She is worried .

Brief Answer:
Every antibiotic has an impact on digestive tract.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

But mentioned by you tablets are antibiotics and antiacids only. There is no medicines used to treat parasites. So please understand, I can not tell if she should take this medicines or not, not knowing their names and not knowing what parasite does she have. It is quite impossible.

Every medicine can affect digestive tract. And for sure antibiotics do this by killing good intestinal bacteria which protect intestines against bad bacteria. But this effect is only temporal. No permanent impact on digestive tract.

So her diagnosis is of three things, endolimax nana, levaduras modearudus, flora bacilar lig disminuida . So that is her diagnosis,. She has been advised to take bactocin 1 tablet every day for ten days,
Flagenase 3 times per day
Micostatin 3 times per day
Omeprazol 2 times per day
So this is for intestinal parasites and a bladder infection.
I would like your opinion regarding medication .
After her last course of medication she felt very sick. What can she do to help alleviate that sickness, nausea problem.

Brief Answer:
Treatment seems to be correct.

Detailed Answer:
Translating her diagnosis she has:
- a parasite which belongs to amoebozoes which should be treated with Metronidazole (Flagenase contains it)
- yeast infection which should be treated with antifungal medicines (Micostatin is such medicine)
- bladder infection which can be treated with Ofloxacine (Bactocin contains it)

I do not understand what for she did get Omeprazol. This medicine decreases stomach acid secretion and is used for acid reflux, peptic ulcer and similar condition treatment.

To make her feel better during and after such treatment she should take probiotic along with this medicines. The treatment seems to be chosen correctly.

Regards.
