Suggest Treatment For Painful Urination And Sudden Sharp Pain Radiating To The Back

Posted on Sat, 5 Apr 2014
Question: 43 yo male painful urination for the past 72 hours. This is coupled with a one time fever of 102 on the day the painful urination began. Seems to be most painful at the beginning of urination. 6 days ago I experienced very sharp pain for 2 minutes starting in my low back and radiate to the front. After 2 minutes and urinating the pain subsided and hasn't been back since, just a dull ache beneath the rib cage in back. I've been taking some left over cipro 500 mg since 48 hours ago and it hasn't helped. No discharge coming from penis. Urine culture was negative, blood culture pending results. My diet has been high in protein for years and recently my water intake has been lacking. 2 years ago I had an abnormal creatinine test which trended back to normal after 6 months. What are your thoughts on the pain given that it's most likely not from infection. Thx

Brief Answer: Kidney stone. Detailed Answer: Hello! Thank you for the query. Your symptoms sounds like a kidney stone which during last 6 days started to moving down from kidney through ureter to urinary bladder. For a kidney stone sudden sharp pain radiating to the back is very characteristic . It indicates that the stone has moved from the kidney. Symptoms you have now, indicate that the stone must be in the bladder. Urine culture, urine analysis and blood work can be negative. Lots of protein intake, low liquids intake can lead to stone creation. I suggest you to: - increase mineral water intake (up to 3 liters/24 hours) - start cranberries supplementation - use some smooth muscles relaxing medicines like Metamizole, Buscolisine - try to move more (like stairs running, jogging) - this should help with the stone excreting - if it wont help, consult urologist Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions. Regards.

Thank you for your follow up. Assuming it is a stone that's stuck, what are the complications and treatment if it doesn't excrete ?

Brief Answer: . Detailed Answer: The main complication with the stone in the bladder is pain and recurring inflammation. However some persons can have the stone in the bladder for years without any symptoms until it grows really large. Cystoscopy can be done to remove the stone from bladder. To do that, urologist should be consulted. Hope this will help. Regards.

Thank you. I meant to say if the stone is stuck in the urethra. My pain is isolated at The end of the urethra.

Brief Answer: . Detailed Answer: If the stone stuck in the urethra, you will get urine obstruction what leads to kidneys failure if not treated. But this is rather hardly possible. The pain can be in the urethra only as a single symptom of stone in the bladder. Regards.
