Brief Answer:
It will help in detecting the cause of inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The presence of swelling and pain in the area is suggestive of an inflammation. It can be due to a local infection or loosening of prosthesis or a soft tissue related problem. This can be diagnosed with the help of MRI scan and bone scan. Any bone crack and perfusion in the area can also be identified. The treatment will depend on the cause of the pain and swelling.
For temporary relief you can do a hot compress in the area and keep the leg elevated on two pillows while resting. You can also use an elastic knee brace for proper support. Do start taking an oral anti inflammatory drug after consulting your orthopedician.
I hope this answers your query.
