Question: hello, i have dimpling under my breasts. i have noticed a small non painful lump in one side where the dimpling is. recently i have experienced swollen breasts but this has subsided. i had a mammogram 18 months ago as id found a largish lump but this was biopsied and i was told it was muscle. if this dimpling etc was cancer would the mammogram have shown it before? im not worried about as im not in any pain.

Brief Answer:
You have to worry more if there is no pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
It says you have dimpling under the breasts- does this mean both the sides?
You have noticed a small non-painful lump in one side where the dimple is> this needs to be investigated by FNAC, Ultrasonography and if required by excision biopsy. It is very important to diagnosed the lumps which are not painful.

You had swelling of both the breasts which has subsided now > This may be related to changing hormonal status so common at your age.

Your last mammogram was 18 months ago, anything can happen during 18 months, hence it is better to be careful and get a clinical evaluation, actual physical examination by a General Surgeon and necessary investigations to prove that there is no development of a cancer.

Largish lump in the breast seen at mammogram 18 months ago, it is difficult to understand the report of biopsy to be a muscle. May I please see the report?

If there was presence of anything, the mammogram would have definitely shown it- but it was done 18 months ago.

You have to be more worried if there is no pain....

I am afraid I do not have a copy of the report, providing one isn't standard procedure for the NHS. Yes I did mean dimpling under both breasts, the lump is small and on the left side of the left breast. I cannot feel any others. I have gained a little weight since stopping smoking three months ago. I thought this may have contributed to the changes as they have only been really apparent for the last 2-3 weeks. I feel well in myself and I work full time. I occasionally drink alcohol and I do not take any regular medication. I have five children who are all now adults. I have had no other seriously non serious health issues.

Brief Answer:
It is better to get confirmed.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Gaining weight can cause the dimpling, and can be taken as normal if it is equal on both sides ad the cooper's ligaments can cause such an appearance. They should be equal.

Well, the tests can be repeated as required, as having doubts is not good.
Yes, getting a copy with NHS is difficult. But if they have told that the lump is benign , nothing to worry about.
Please get the new lump and dimpling checked for clearing any doubts and avoidable anxiety.
