Question: I am experiencing edema on my lower legs, ankles and feet, which are painful to touch, difficult to walk or stand. The skin presents a red contour around shin and calf and top of foot. Left leg is more affected than the right leg. Both legs have very dark patches that and some of them are painful to touch.
I take repeat prescription for high blood pressure and cholesterol. I am nor obese but over-weight and live a sedentary life due to nature of work, which requires long hours in front of the computer.
By the way, I am 62 years old.
Any clues?

Brief Answer:
Deep vein thrombosis/ Congestive cardiac failure.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. After going through your question there are two possibilities in my mind. One is deep vein thrombosis. It can be confirmed by colour Doppler study of both lower limbs to confirm it. Second possibility is congestive cardiac failure ( reduced pumping power of heart leading to pulling of blood in legs). It needs tests of heart function such as ECG and echocardiogram and cardiology consultation. In both the conditions elevation of limb and avoid dependency of limb will be useful. Further treatment can be suggested after investigations. You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
