Posted on Fri, 2 Jun 2017
Question: it seems that lately I have been experiencing painful cramping in my legs, specificly at night while asleep. I awaken from a dead sleep to painful cramping which as of late has occurred mainly in the lower part of my right leg and sometimes in my left leg as well. there have been occasions where the pain was in both legs at the same time. the pain subsides when I get out of bed and move about for a period of time.

Brief Answer:
Minerals deficiency, dehydration or overuse of muscles

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Since there are no other symptoms associated with the leg cramping at night then most probably it is due to either:

1) mineral deficiency especially calcium and magnesium
2) dehydration
3) prolonged standing during the day or overuse/strain of muscles

I'd suggest to please check the levels of the serum electrolytes (calcium and magnesium mainly) and based on the results, take calcium and magnesium supplements either alone or in the form of multivitamin tablets. It'll be worthwhile to check the blood sugar levels(FBS, 2hr-PPBS) as well.

Also, you need to make sure you drink enough fluids (at least eight cups) daily to avoid any dehydration. Try not to exhaust yourself with prolonged standing during the day.

I hope I answered your question.
